Prepare for your Irish Homestay
Generally, and to ensure that your child gets all the benefits from their stay (optimise their language progress, gain independence etc. ) we advise
you to follow preparatory steps to help prepare them for the visit:
Make sure they understand and accept the purpose of the trip.
Explain to them that there will be cultural differences. For a successful Homestay, your child must follow the rules and habits of their host family. Explain that cultural difference is expressed in everyday life, such as eating habits, cooking methods, times of getting up and going to sleep, meal times, religious practice.
Encourage them to adapt. Explain to your child that they need to be ready to integrate into daily lives of their host family. It will be up to them to adapt to this new environment .
Encourage them to communicate. Persistent smart phone computer and Internet usage are a serious challenge to linguistic integration and progress, it also indicates a lack of interest in your host. A simple phone for emergency contact is ideal.
Encourage your child to understand and get to know the host family, to be curious, to ask questions and not hesitate to talk about himself, his family and his interests.
Encourage them to participate and share the life of the family. Get involved in all family activities, supermarket, TV shows, visiting friends, leisure. It is in this way that he/she will enrich their vocabulary and gain the best experience.
